Most Expensive Cameras in the World: No.1 is Unbelievable

It was 1826, and everyone was living their lives as usual. Little did they know that a French inventor's life’s work had come to fruition and would change the world forever. We are talking about Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, a French inventor known for revolutionising the portrait industry by inventing the very first camera. Since then, cameras have come a long way; now, even our phones have state-of-the-art cameras. On that note, today, we will be looking at some of the most expensive cameras in the world and what makes them so special. So, without any further ado, let’s get started.
5 Most Expensive Cameras in the World
It's no surprise that antiques can be quite expensive. Similarly, the most expensive cameras in the world we have included in this list are mostly old, which is partly responsible for their astronomical prices.
5. A Hasselblad From The Moon
Hasselblad cameras are some of the most sought-after cameras in the world. Experts say that the colour grading of Hasselblad cameras is like that of no other camera on the market. Even today, their cameras sell for over $30,000. However, what makes this Hasselblad camera one of the most expensive cameras in the world is not the fact that it is new or old. The main driving factor behind its price is that it was taken to the moon in 1971 with the Apollo 15 mission. It was sold at an auction in 2020 for a whopping $910,400.
Price: $910,400
4. 1957 Leica MP Black Paint No. 55
Leica is one of the best companies that has made a name for itself by making cameras that have a knack for standing out and taking close to real-life photos. Moreover, Leica is famous for making limited-time editions, and this 1957 camera is from Leica’s MP edition and is painted in an even rarer black colour. Only 412 units were ever made, and most of them did not stand the test of time, but this one did, in almost flawless condition, making it one of the most expensive cameras in the world.
Price: $ 1.3 Million
3. Jony Ive and Marc Newson’s (RED) Leica M
Leica cameras are pretty expensive on their own, as we have already established in the previous entries. However, this camera is really special, even from Leica’s perspective, as it is designed by 2 of the most influential designers, and there is no other unit, making it one of the most expensive cameras in the world. Made as a one-and-done camera by Leica and designed by Apple designer Jony Ive and industrial designer Marc Newson, this camera was made especially for a 2013 auction which aimed to raise money for AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria in conjunction with RED, a charity organisation made by Bono and Bobby Shriver.
Price: $1.8 Million

2. Leica O-Series No. 122
There was a time when Leica wasn’t very well known and wasn’t considered one of the best camera companies in the world. However, all of this changed after the launch of their first series, known as Series A. This was its precursor, made with the sole intention of reading the market and making some buzz. As a result, not a lot of cameras were made. This makes Leica O-Series No. 122 one of the most expensive cameras in the world, especially its rarity. Out of the 25 units made, only a few are left, and even fewer have all the necessary parts like the rangefinder and camera cap.
Price: $2.97 Million
1 Oskar Barnack’s 1923 0-Series Leica
1. Oskar Barnack’s 1923 0-Series Leica
This is another one of the most expensive cameras in the world. However, this is the same camera as the previous entry, and it does not even have all the important pieces. So, what makes it the most expensive camera in the world that has ever sold? Well, the name of its owner is enough. Oskar Barnack himself owned this camera. Who is Oskar Barnack, one might ask? So, Oskar is one of the, if not the most influential people in the camera industry. He is the maker of Leica, and this makes this camera the most expensive one ever sold.
Price: $13 Million
