Ready to Transform Your Lighting Setup from Drab to Fab?

Lighting can significantly impact any event. It sets the mood, highlights key moments, and transforms ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences. Among various lighting tools available, one that truly stands out as a game-changer is Gobo. This versatile tool is essential for event lighting and adding a magical touch to your projects. Whether you're working in theatre, film, events, or 3D rendering, gobo lights can create unforgettable moments.

Let’s briefly discuss Gobo and understand how it works, what material it's made of, and its applications.

What is a Gobo?

A Gobo is simply a small, stencilled or etched circular disc used in lighting fixtures to project images, shapes or patterns. You can also consider it as a filter for your lighting. But have you ever wondered where the term gobo comes from? It is actually a short form of ‘Go Between Optics’ describing the positioning of the gobo inside of your lighting fixtures.

Though most people think of them as technology, the way they've been used and the technology used to produce them have improved over the years. With the constant improvement, it allows more complex designs and high-definition projection.

How Does Gobo Work?

The light projected from the lamp inside the fixtures shines onto the gobo. The gobo has various designs or patterns that enable the light to pass through specific areas. After passing, the light typically hits a lens that corrects the image’s orientation. So, this way the image appears as intended on a wall, a floor or any other surface of your liking.

However, most fixtures have multiple gobos placed on a rotating wheel, allowing the designer to automatically switch projections. Typically, theatrical lighting fixtures may house just one static gobo through a gobo holder, but you can find ones with multiple options.

How to Use Gobo?

Gobo lights can be used in a variety of ways to enhance mood and atmosphere. Here are the creative ways to use them.

  • It can be used in corporate events to spotlight your company logo or tagline across the stage.
  • You can use this in weddings to personalise the dance floor with the couple's initials.
  • Gobo can add more charm to any themed event by projecting patterns like snowflakes for winter galas or tropical leaves for summer parties.
  • Additionally, it can be used in product launches to display your product's name or campaign's slogan in lights.

Materials Used for Gobo Patterns

Gobo lights are made of various materials, and each material is designed to suit different needs. Choosing the right option truly depends on the design and lantern you expect to project from. Here they are:

Metal Gobos

These material gobos are best known for long-term use as they can handle high heat and are highly durable. However, they’re restricted to simple designs due to the need for structural integrity.

Glass Gobos

Glass material is suitable for those who need intricate designs and colour. They can seamlessly project detailed patterns and are available in vibrant colours, but they are delicate and require careful handling.

Plastic Gobos

These materials stand out for being budget-friendly and versatile. But they are not as durable as metal and glass gobos. Plastic gobos are only reliable for short-term use.

Applications of Gobo Lights
