Starlink Mini: A Revolution In The Global Internet Space

Starlink Mini To Break Internet

When you and your friends go backpacking into the wild, internet connectivity is the only thing that plagues the backpacking trip and sometimes even cuts it short. Having no signals or internet connectivity means that you are disconnected from the rest of the world. Although the thought of being alone can be fascinating, only until you get into trouble. However, now, there is a solution: Elon Musk’s Starlink. The internet provider company has launched its Starlink Mini router, which is a travel router you can use on your backpacking trips. The best thing about this is that it doesn’t consume a lot of power and can be a real lifesaver.

What Is Starlink?

Starlink is a Satellite Internet Constellation, which is exactly as it sounds. It is a constellation of satellites that revolves around the earth and provides wireless 24/7, low-latency internet. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SpaceX, a private space exploration agency. Starlink plans to plant 12,000 satellites in the LEO (Lower Earth Orbit), and as of March 2024, the company has already launched more than 6000 satellites in the LEO. This has enabled the company to provide its services in around 75 countries. Now Starlink has launched their latest product, the Starlink Mini, which is poised to make the service accessible to even more people.

What Is Starlink Mini?

Starlink internet was already available for homes, boats, cars, planes and villages. However, now the Starlink is also available to backpackers. The new Starlink mini is a laptop-shaped equipment that has a router and a dish to receive and send signals. Starlink mini is also very small and light and requires a lot less power than other similar products, which makes it ideal for backpacking, trailing, and other adventure exercises where there can be a problem with the network.

Despite its low power consumption, the Starlink Mini can still provide speeds in excess of 100Mbps. It can be powered by a DC adapter on the go. Elon Musk took it to Twitter and shared, “ I just set it up right now and am writing this post through space. It took less than 5 minutes. It's easily carried in a backpack. This product will change the world.

Starlink sent a few demo products to some reviewers, and one of them, The Verge, reported that the Starlink Mini consumes around 33-62 Watts of power. However, now this power number has come down to just 20-40 Watts. What this means is that you can power the device for 3 hours using a 30,000mAh power bank, 2 hours with a 20,000mAh power bank, and a little more than 1 hour with a 10,000mAh power bank. In short, it requires a minimum of 100 watts of power to work properly.

However, the best part about Starlink Mini is its size and portability. The dish measures 11.75* 10.2* 1.45 inches, and the router's weight is also not much. It weighs just 1.1 Kg or 1.53 Kg with a 15-metre DC cable and a kickstand. Also, it has an IP67 rating, which means that it is protected from dust and rain and even stays submerged in water for a very short period of time.

In the US, the Starlink Mini cannot be bought on its own. You first have to buy a residential Starlink connection, and then the Starlink mini will come as an add-on to your existing plan. According to sources, it costs around $500 per router in the states and an additional $30 for internet services. In short, if you have a residential and Starlink mini connection, you will get 50Gb of data every month after $150, just for the internet service. You can buy data add-ons for a price of $1 per GB.

Revolutionising The World With Satellite Internet

Although pretty much every telecom company owns a plethora of satellites, the infrastructure deployed by Starlink is second to none. This ensures low-latency, high-speed internet with worldwide connectivity. This can bring about an internet revolution as 2.6 billion people worldwide still don’t have access to the internet, let alone high-speed internet.
