Apple’s Milestone: PC Games Available on iOS Devices
The Silicon Valley-based tech giant Apple has made a ground-breaking move by approving its app store's first PC emulator app, UTM SE. It is a huge milestone and will allow iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro users to run classic software and games on their Apple devices.
The UTM SE team expressed gratitude on social media, thanking the AltStore team for their assistance and Apple for reconsidering their policy. In June, Apple initially rejected notarising the UTM SE for third-party app stores. The app is expected to be available on AltStore PAL.
The UTM SE software was developed by Turing Software LLC and is built on QEMU, a widely used open-source emulator. This PC emulator app lets users download and run full versions of operating systems, such as Linux, Windows, and macOS. UTM SE also allows the creation of virtual machines, although it doesn’t include virtual machines. Users can also access pre-built machines, which are available on the company’s official website.
The UTM SE emulator is a versatile tool that can support terminal mode and is compatible with operating systems' VGA (video graphics array) mode. With a size of 1.7 GB, it supports 12 different languages, making it accessible to a wide range of users. The app also allows users to boot an OS straight from local storage and emulate systems developed for x86, PPC, and RISC-V architecture, promising a rich and diverse user experience. It is free to use, which makes the deal even better for iOS users.
