Working Hours in India: Laws, Trends & Flexibility
India has seen a rapid evolution of working hours.. From factory floors to remote work, the modern Indian workforce has evolved into a hybrid of traditional and modern work environments. This change reflects not only legal transformations but also a cultural shift toward a more considerate approach to work-life balance, employee health and wellness, and productivity.
What Do Indian Labour Laws Say?
According to Factories Act of 1948 working hours in India are not more than 9 hours per day and maximum 48 hours per week. These rules are made for the protection of the employees from being overstressed both physically and mentally in a working organisation.
Also there are certain rules about the total working hours in India an employee may spend in a workplace per day. This is also known as “Spread Over” which generally means that the total time spent at work should not be more than 10.5 hours per day including the break time.
If an employee has been working more than 5 hours continuously, they must be given a break of at least 30 to 60 minutes.
A Shift Toward Flexibility
While laws determine the structure, working hours in India can differ for employees based on industry, company, or worker. Two large trends have made flexibility a critical component of the modern Indian workplace: knowledge jobs and IT-based services.

Are 90-Hour Work Weeks Legal?
A positive trend that we see is the increased focus on mental health and employee wellbeing. Many companies are starting to implement structured wellbeing programs, paid time off, and working arrangements that include flexibility. These adjustments are in line with the global cultural shift towards creating sustainable workplaces and advocating for the legal number of hours worked in India.
Similarly, the Indian government is also considering reforms to modernise labour codes to increase labour efficiency while suitably protecting workers. The new codes that are emerging indicate flexibility on permissible hours within a week's work, provided the hours are less than 48. Given this strategic policy context, a four-day working week could become a reality.

Working hours in India present a complex and constantly evolving paradigm. From the protections granted by the Factories Act to the flexibility of remote working and part-time jobs, working professionals have a much wider range of options today than in previous times.
