Microsoft Is Developing An In-House AI Model MAI-1
According to recent reports, the tech giant Microsoft is developing a new large language model (LLM) named MAI-1. Earlier, the company aimed to invest in OpenAI and use its model, like GPT-4, to power Microsoft Copilot products. However, it is reported that Microsoft is now training its in-house LLM. This is the first time that Microsoft is training a big in-house AI after investing over $10 million in OpenAI.
According to the reports by The Information, Microsoft’s MAI-1 is much larger than its previously trained open-source models. This means the model will need huge computing power and training data, making it more expensive. Reports also indicate that MAI-1 will have around 500 billion guidelines.
In comparison to Microsoft’s MAI-1, OpenAI’s GPT-4 has over a trillion guidelines. On the other hand, smaller AI models of Meta and Mistral contain 70 billion parameters. The CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Microsoft AI, Mustafa Suleyman, supervises the work of MAI-1. Mustafa is an AI pioneer who co-founded DeepMind and Infection AI.
Reportedly, Microsoft may preview its in-house AI model close to the Build developer conference later this month. Until now, there has been no clarification about the purpose of the model. Some reports say that Microsoft uses computing resources like Nvidia GPUS and data to train MAI-1.
Clarification By Microsoft
Some reports claimed that Microsoft is developing MAI-1 to compete with Open AI, but Microsoft CTO (Chief Technology Officer) Kevin Scott clarified it on his LinkedIn profile. He shared, “I’m not sure why this is news, but just to summarise the obvious: we build big supercomputers to train AI models; our partner Open AI uses these supercomputers to train frontier-defining models; and then we both make these models available in products and services so that lots of people can benefit from them. We rather like this arrangement.”
The tech behemoth is making a statement of its innovation in the high-tech world by developing MAI-1. Soon the AI model will be available to use and will help users with its features.
