Why The Venomous Abyss Turned Into a Nightmare for Everyday Raiders

While Liquid and Echo trade percentage points on Mythic Ula'tek, most of the player base is fighting a very different battle. The Venomous Abyss has quietly become the hardest raid tier in years for regular groups, and the numbers back that up. We have something special to share with you. Guilds that keep wiping on this content are not doing anything wrong so much as running into a genuinely brutal tier. Plenty of groups are turning to a Venomous Abyss boost just to see the later bosses without burning weeks on repeat attempts.

The Number That Shocked Everyone

Raider.io leaderboard data puts a hard figure on the problem. Only around 230 guilds worldwide earned Ahead of the Curve: Ula'tek in the first week. Recent tiers usually see that number in the thousands within the same window. 

That is not a shallow gully. It is a precipice. Amirdrassil swept nearly 900 guilds in the first week, and even a more restrictive level such as Nerub-ar Palace still dropped about 640. A raid this low in the normal rate is an indication of actual tuning difficulties and not a bad week of bad luck among the average players.

The picture is even more evident by the regional division. Most of those 230 clears came from a handful of established guilds with years of coordinated raiding behind them. Forget about a wider Heroic crowd that normally finishes within days. To a mid-tier guild that was accustomed to clearing Heroic on a Tuesday reset, this tier made that same run a multi-week project. It also describes the reason why forums were buzzing nearly as soon as they were launched. 

The Green-on-Green Problem 

Numbers only tell part of the story. A massive portion of the complaints on Reddit is not related to damage output at all. Players claim that they just cannot see what is going on on their own screen. The same palette of poison-green is used on ground effects, overhead danger markers, and the raid floor itself. A debuff such as Unstable Miasma on Entombed Sentinels fades into the landscape beneath it. Players are not failing the mechanic; they are failing to spot it in time.

Certain groups have begun to fix the issue themselves by creating their own WeakAuras that turn bright non-green when a debuff is applied. That workaround is useful. However, it still implies that players are correcting a visibility problem that Blizzard should have identified during testing. Color-blind players complain that the fight is almost unreadable without some sort of addon layer over the default UI.

Two Bosses Breaking Every PUG 

Ask any pickup group why their run fell apart, and two names come up constantly. Both fights punish exactly the kind of loose coordination that PUGs run on by default.

• Entombed Sentinels requires players to cross Helical Toxins debuffs until each person holds exactly four stacks, and one player landing on five stacks wipes the whole raid.
• The Twin Fangs stack Eternal Venom on both bosses at once, and killing them even slightly out of sync lets the surviving snake unleash a raid-ending ultimate.

Neither fight is forgiving without real voice communication and a plan everyone actually follows. Without a coordinated group, both bosses will turn a normal pull into a certain reset.

What Happens Next 

The community has settled on a single theory. Blizzard tailored this raid to esports guilds and abandoned ordinary players. Such a gap is not typically sustainable, as a raid tier can only be successful when the majority of the audience is capable of completing it.

A real balance pass is anticipated by most players after the World First race is completed. A damage cut in the 15 to 20 percent range on the worst poison effects would bring Heroic back in line with past tiers. Better visual telegraphs on the ground effects would correct as much frustration as any change of number.

Blizzard has reversed such a tuning in the past, most famously when Vault of the Incarnates had such low week-one clear rates. That level ultimately stabilized into a normal difficulty curve when hotfixes dropped. Many players anticipate the same trend here.

Until such a patch is available, groups have an easy decision. Some will continue to grind pulls against a fight that is set to a different audience in the hope that practice will bridge the gap itself. Others are bypassing the wall altogether and returning when the tuning actually fits their equipment and schedule. 

The Bigger Picture

A raid this hard in week one is rare, and the response from Blizzard will say a lot about how the rest of the season plays out. If the numbers stay this low much longer, expect louder pushback and a faster hotfix than usual. For now, The Venomous Abyss stands as a reminder that a tier built around the top 0.1 percent of guilds does not automatically work for everyone else.
