How To Encrypt A Folder On Mac With These Simple Steps

In order to keep your folder safe and protective, you need to follow the step-to-step guide. Start Now

To protect your important files on Mac, you need to open the Disk Utility and create a Disk Image of the folder. You can easily do this by using Spotlight search or thought Application>Utilities>Disk Utility. Once you open the Disk Utility, follow the below steps:

  1. From the Disk Utility, select File> New Image> Image From Folder from your menu bar.

  2. Browse for the folder you want to protect and click to Choose

  3. In the next step, choose the location for the folder image and give it a different name or add a tag.

  4. Once you have done this, select your encryption from the two options i.e.128-bit AES and 256-bit. Here, 128-bit AES is a bit faster for the encryption/decryption process but the second one is more secure.

  5. Once you select your option, it’ll ask you to create and verify the password for the folder image. Make sure to note down the password somewhere because you won’t be able to access the folder if you forget the password.

  6. In the next step, you need to select the image format. There are two options - Read-only & Read/Write. Choose the option wisely because Read-only will only allow viewing the folder but if you want to make the changes to the folder such as adding more items to the folder then Read/Write would be your type.

  7. Finally, click on Save to proceed. It will take a few minutes depending on the number of items in the folder. Hit Done when it finishes.

  8. Now, to check the saved folder again, navigate to the location where you have saved it, and double click on it. It will appear in file format DMG.

  9. Enter the password you created for the folder earlier and click on OK. You can see one option of “Remember Password in My Keychain” below the password box. Remember checking this box will defect the purpose of requiring a password to open the folder.

  10. You now see the mounted disk image of your folder. Double-click on the image and from here you can make the changes that you wish to do such as to add, remove, or access the items just like before.

  11. When you want to stop using the folder, the password protects it again by unmounting it. Right, click on the folder image and select Eject “Folder Name”.

This is how to password protect a folder in a simple way. The next time you want to access the folder, just double-click the DMG file, enter your password and you’re good to go.
