Asus TUF Gaming FX505 Detailed Review

There was a time when gaming laptops used to be reserved for rich people. Recognized as a bulky piece of heavy hardware, these gaming machines used to come with a high price tag. However, increased demand for powerful and portable hardware paved a way for OEMs to introduce amazing options for buyers, resulting in cheaper gaming laptops starting as low as Rs. 50,000. Asus recently joined the community with its first mid-range gaming laptop named Asus TUF Gaming FX505. It sports higher grade 0f hardware and advanced features. We received the 15.6” model powered by Intel Core i7-8750H processors, 16GB RAM paired with Nvidia GDDR5 (4GB), and amazingly, an FHD IPS Display with a notable refresh rate of 144MHz. Asus TUF Gaming FX505 with the same configuration will cost around Rs. 1,29,990. However, its entry-level laptop is available at Rs. 79,990. With a lot to be tested, we checked the laptop through its pace to find whether or not it worth the price.

Build and Design

Asus continued to stroll with the ROG-inspired “Radiating X-design” for its laptops. Keeping everything aside, it is not designed to walk into the board meeting room. With its red exhaust & golden fins and aggressive lines of the lid, multiple elements have been used in the design of this powerful machine.

First, when we opened and used this laptop, we noticed a noticeable flex on the outer lid and unequal lift on the hinges. When opening the laptop using one hand, its display gets a sharp curve to a few degrees. This couldn’t be a flaw in the build quality, that’s why we put it under essential choice. You will soon notice that the FX505 solely stands on its ‘TUF’ design, bringing MIL.STD801G rating along with a powerful performance. This particular rating states that the laptop has been drop tested. To test Asus's claims, we put our luck and money at risk and dropped the laptop three times. Luckily it survives all with minor dents.

Moving on to the next, the design of the Asus TUF Gaming FX505 has got slight changes from its predecessors. All the ports are given on the left side to eliminate any interruption while using the mouse. It is designed keeping all the modern needs in mind. On the right side of the laptop, you will have an additional exhaust port to pass the heat, which we often don’t mind. But, more cooling always comes as an additional benefit in gaming-dedicated laptops.

Display

We received and reviewed a Full HD IPS panel display with 98% sRGB colors as per the Spyder color calibration tool. However, the viewing angle was slightly poor than the usual 178-degree. Additionally, if you and your friend decided to watch a movie on this, you won’t lose visual fidelity. What makes it possible is that Asus has finally narrowed down the bezels on the display panel to make it more immersive.

Keyboard & Trackpad

The Asus TUF Gaming FX505 comes with a full-sized keyboard with enough spacing between each key. Additionally, the WASD keys are transparent to stand out among others. Also, you will get some grips on the keyboard, but the flex could make long typing sessions slightly awkward. Secondly, the placement of the arrow kids is a little confusing and questionable. Sometimes, I entered CTRL and O keys on either side of the arrow keys.

This Asus TUF is one of the best gaming laptop under 70000 that comes with versatile features yet priced affordable at less than 70k. Apart from this Asus FX 505 model, the company also launched new models with latest configuration like Ryzen 7 Processor, Backlit keyboard and latest Nvidia Processor.

However, the Asus TUV Gaming comes with a gamer’s dedicated keyboard, perfect for playing counter strike and either of the best VR games.

Storage

One of the best features we found is that the Asus TUV Gaming Fx505 comes with two drives, the first is a 1TB 5400 rpm SATA HDD, and the second is a 512GB Solid State Drive. Moving to the performance of the drives, the primary NVMe drives clocks a score of 1723 MB/s and another comes with 814 MB/s on reading and writing, respectively.

Gaming Performance

Since the Asus TUF Gaming FX505 is a gaming dedicated laptop, we reviewed the 8th generation Intel Core i7-8750H. The processor is paired with 16GB of DDR4 RAM rated 2666MHz. Next to the processor is the Nvidia GTX 1060 with 6GB video memory, enough to push most games to high edge rates upheld by the presentation. We confirmed this with benchmarks, where the FX505 scored 5133 in FireStrike Extreme and 133875 on IceStorm Extreme. Unigine paradise uncovered the last score of 2610 with a normal edge pace of 103 fps. While the benchmark execution of the machine was great, what truly made a difference in the manner by which it would deal with games. So tried the machine with Doom, Forza Horizon 4, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Metro Last Light, and Wolfenstein: New Colossus. All games were set to their most elevated potential illustrations setting.

Should You Deserve It?

One thing that we must say is that the Asus TUF Gaming FX505 is not a cheap laptop. It is powered by Intel 8th gen Core i7 chip and Nvidia GTX 1060, the machine has undergone several chops to turn it into a legit gaming machine. It delivers enough juice to meet all your emerging demands without any interruption. Additionally the MIL.STD-810G rating is an extra benefit with a considerable flex to the body. If you just want to play games without stressing other things, it is undoubtedly the best mid-range gaming laptop. We leave everything on you because you’re the one to use.
