Ranking The Best Maps In Overwatch

Maps are the bedrock to the success of any competitive Esports title, and Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch is no different. Ever since the game’s launch back in 2016, the map pool in Overwatch has been one of the most vibrant and diverse of any community in the gaming world, featuring dozens of different visuals and all of them rewarding a different play style.

With the choice of map impacting the Overwatch betting markets for both its professional and casual scene hugely, we thought we would take a look through some of the very best Blizzard have to offer and which ones you should be paying particular attention to.

Oasis

Despite being teased to fans of the game as early as Blizzcon 2016, the intricate art visuals of Oasis meant that it wasn’t until November 29 that the map finally became playable to the public, making it one of the freshest games in the meta at the time of writing.

It is a Control map split into three stages: City Centre, Gardens and University. Set in the south of Iraq, it is a strikingly beautiful map filled with warm colours, impressive architecture and plenty of unique features to check out and explore through.

On a competitive level, it also has one of the more unique features in its city centre acting as the map’s control point and being in a circular shape rather than the standard square form. Needing to cover the point from all sides, the map also benefits hugely from the jump pads dotted around to help heroes like McCree and Zarya find more of a home here.

Nepal

An absolute Overwatch classic and one of the most referenced and memorable maps in the Esports world, Nepal has been in the game ever since its launch. It is a Control map split into three parts: Nepal Sanctum, Nepal Shrine and Nepal Village and lays out a pilgrimage taken by travellers through snow-covered villages, up daunting Himalayan mountains and through an ancient monastery.

Always a popular choice with fans and players, both pro and casual, the Sanctum is really where the map stands out. With plenty of quick entryways and chokepoints, the section can go through some absolutely manic swings for either side.

Hollywood

Take in that gorgeous Californian sunshine and immerse yourself in the lands of celebrity superstardom with Overwatch’s brilliant Hollywood map. Work your way past the palm trees and fancy cars and make your way to the bright lights and red carpets by exploring film studios and dealing with plenty of film stars, camera crews and fellow superstars in this Hybrid map.

The map is wonderfully balanced and very easy for newer players to come in and pick up. Whilst it can be slightly unforgiving at times to certain stealth heroes, there are still plenty of high spots that they can nestle in behind. And, again while most heroes and play styles should be fine on Hollywood, tanks such as Reinhardt on either side always do well.

King’s Row

In February 2018 Jeff Kaplan, the vice president of Blizzard Entertainment and Overwatch’s lead designer, hosted a poll on Blizzard’s official forums asking the fans of Overwatch what their favourite map was. At the time of writing, over 20,300 votes were cast and the runaway winner was King’s Row.

And we have to say it’s an excellent choice.

Set in a alternate-reality version of London, filled to the brim with steampunk futuristic additions as well as the the UK standard yellow streetlights and red double-decker buses, it’s an absolute peach of an example of modern FPS maps done perfectly. Pinpoint strategies offer the highest rewards, encouraging out of the box thinking and continued honing and it really is the one map in the pool at the moment that allows every hero and every style to shine through across different sections.
