Could Qualcomm's New Mobile Gaming Hardware End The Console Wars For Good

Could Qualcomm's Mobile Gaming Hardware End Console Wars

When you think about gaming, most people envision playing their favorite titles on PC or consoles. However, Qualcomm suggests that players will be caring less about the platforms they use and more about the games they’re placing.

According to Qualcomm, the future of the gaming industry is mobile - a sector that has grown more rapidly than any other platform in the last five years. The company is confident about the future of mobile gaming as they’re a major stakeholder in the smartphone market.

Qualcomm produces the Snapdragon chipsets featured in millions of smartphones worldwide and its chips are also used in standalone VR headsets and Windows laptops. Besides chipsets, Qualcomm also produces gaming-focused software for smartphones, IoT tech, communication technology, automotive systems, and more.

Qualcomm has its fingers in lots of pots, so it’s understandable why they have a good insight into how the technology industry is transforming. According to the company, mobile gaming dominated 52% of the global gaming industry in 2021, with PC gaming taking 20% and consoles accounting for 28%. That’s a 15% increase in mobile gaming compared to 2020 figures, continuing its upward trend.

Mobile games have also gone through huge advancements in quality over the last few years, rising above the traditionally simplistic and light graphics. Today, players can access the best casino sites India or enjoy an unmatched gaming experience using their smartphones with titles like Call of Duty:Mobile and Fortnite.

Importantly, the experiences that mobile gaming offers are in-line with console and PC gaming. That means similar visuals, control schemes, and synced data. As a result, the gaming market is witnessing an erosion of walled gardens, bridging the gap between the traditional platforms.

According to Qualcomm’s research, modern gamers care about accessing great games and they’re willing to switch between PC, console, and mobiles, whichever that’s available. The rise of cloud gaming is also an important factor to consider in the boom of mobile gaming, especially with the growth of super-fast 5G networks.

With cloud gaming, streaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming, Nvidia GeForce Now, and Google Stadia allow instant access to PC and console games traditionally unavailable to smartphones. Additionally, the rise of mobile controllers means that the gaming experience is almost identical to PC and console gaming albeit on smaller screens.

Unlike media streaming services where the content is the same no matter where you access it, gaming has been different for years. However, gaming could be heading in a similar direction depending on the available technology and the developers on the market. That’s where Qualcomm is proving useful, helping to develop the technology to make such a future possible.

On the mobile gaming market, that comes in form of their snapdragon processors and software that developers and manufacturers can use to maximize their gaming experiences. The company’s fourth release of the Snapdragon Elite Gaming allows high frame rate gaming and desktop-level capabilities. That includes updatable GPU drivers with new additions like volumetric rendering and improving the look of fog and smoke in games.

Despite these notable tech advancements in mobile gaming, PC and console gaming will always have a place in the market as these platforms will always feature the hardware for an upgradable local experience. Nonetheless, you can expect more games to be available across multiple platforms.
